Category Home tips

Embarking on a renovation project is exciting but if not carefully thought out, they can end up costly. There is the added inconvenience if you must live with contractors in your home and not to mention the dust... It is always worth it in the end and can add resale value when looking to sell. Who doesn't love a modern, unique bathroom?

In this article, we give you some practical advice on how to realise your dream of a beautiful cost-effective new bathroom on a budget. Managing the costs does not mean that you must compromise on quality. Here are some ideas on how to achieve your dream.

  1. Have a plan

The good old saying, failing to plan is planning to fail rings true with any renovation project. You need to be clear around your budget with some room for flexibility. You also need a good idea of what you want and how you can use the space optimally. Examples of items to factor in your budget include fixtures, accessories, tiling, painting, and plumbing. Light fixtures are also a consideration and can be costly. Obtaining quotes from reputable contractors are also an important 1st step as this will form an integral part of your planning.

  1. DIY

There are elements of the renovation that you may be able to do yourself. You can avoid labour costs by putting on your overall and painting yourself or even consider attempting some wall tiling. If you are going to attempt some of the renovation project, ensure you have the correct materials and avoid inferior products as this could end up costing more in the long run. YouTube has some great DIY videos.

  1. Work with what you have

Try to utilise the existing layout optimally to avoid additional plumbing and electrical costs. Sometimes all it takes is a new basin, bathtub and / or taps with a good paint job to change your bathroom completely. Accessories such as mirrors can also compliment the space beautifully. Wall tiles are also a very creative way to add colour and uniqueness.

  1. Bargain shop

There are wonderful thrift shops for accessory items and you are often supporting charities in need when purchasing items from them. Salvage yards are a good place to look for bigger items such as windows and cabinets which can be upcycled. There are so many wonderful ideas available on platforms such as pinterest on how to re-use items in your home.

  1. Add some plants

Plants add life and colour to any space. When choosing a plant for a bathroom, ensure you are taking lighting and air into account. You want to choose a plant that thrives in a moist environment.

  1. Linen

You might want to splurge on some new towels to complete your look. These can add a pop of colour to compliment the bathroom. There are also some very creative ways to display these such as wall mounted shelves for storage or towel rails. Rugs can add an element of warmth to the room.

In closing, any renovation is exhilarating but planning is crucial to avoid unexpected costs and disappointment. If executed well, it will add value to your home at resale stage.
